SUMMER TIME MEDITATION
Meditation is a simple, easy practice that can provide stress relief and promote peace from within. Meditation brings us back to the present moment and encourages mindfulness in everyday life. An improved sense of wellbeing and harmony will reveal itself through changes in the skin. Meditation encourages an increased flow of oxygen, bolstering skin’s appearance. Decreasing stress can also minimize pre-existing skin conditions such as rosacea and acne. Additionally, meditation provides numerous health benefits. Meditation can rewire the brain and affect the body on a deep physical level. Some of the health benefits of meditation include:
• Reduces blood pressure
• Minimizes inflammation
• Eases anxiety
• Lessens incidence, severity, and duration of illnesses like the flu
• Relieves menopausal symptoms
• Reduces digestive problems
If you are new to meditation, the easiest way to begin meditating is to just sit still for a few minutes. Sit up straight in a chair with your chin level to the ground. Breathe deeply and gently keep your attention on your breath. If you are having trouble stilling your mind, silently repeat the word “om” on every inhale and exhale. With daily meditation, you will see positive changes in your psychology, physical well-being, and even appearance.
Inside the Beauty Clinic, Susan Ciminelli offers a sixty-minute Guided Color Meditation and Crystal Healing. During this session, Susan will guide you through a meditation that will leave you feeling peaceful and whole.
GETTING BIKINI READY
• Minimizing Cellulite
First start by vigorously dry brushing your entire body with a loofah mitt starting at your ankles and working your way up (for more information on dry brushing refer to Susan’s book. The Ciminelli Solution: A 7 Day Plan For Radiant Skin). Next, add 2 tablespoons of Algae Fine Powder and 2 tablespoons of Toning Bath to your bath. Soak for about 45 minutes. Rinse well, pat skin dry and apply Marine Lotion from head to toe.
• Reducing Water Retention
Avoid salty and processed foods as well as dairy and wheat. Chew your food very slowly and thoroughly for maximum digestion and absorption and avoid eating after 8pm. If you’re over 35, eat ginger every day to increase digestive enzymes.
• How to Prevent Ingrown Hair at The Bikini Line
Apply Seawater after waxing, shaving or laser treatment. Girls, try to wait at least 4 weeks in between bikini waxing’s to further help prevent ingrown hair. After laser treatment, make sure you ramp up your sun protection.
BEACH BAG ESSENTIALS
Before you head to the beach, be sure you are bringing along all of the essentials to keep your body and skin healthy and hydrated.
Bottle of Water – It’s easy to become dehydrated in the hot summer sun. Drinking water is necessary for keeping the body functioning optimally. Make sure to use glass bottle and always have one handy in your bag.
Fruits And Veggies That Contain A Lot Of Water- Just to name a few, berries, watermelon, cantaloupe and other melons, celery and cucumbers will all keep you hydrated internally.
FROM THE KITCHEN
Coconut water, cucumber, celery, basil, ginger
8 oz coco water
1 quarter cup of cucumber without the seeds
1 celery stick
1/3 fresh basil leaves
Use a high powered blender, such as a Ninja Blender or Nutra-bullet. Basil kills bacteria in the blood, while cucumber is very hydrating. Coconut water flushes everything out. This is a refreshing drink to make to keep your skin healthy during the hot summer months!
Q&A WITH SUSAN
Q: What changes should I be making to my skincare routine in the summer?
A: In the summer you should always clean your skin with a gentle cleansing gel, as well as a scrub a few times a day. It is best to wash, rinse, and repeat a few times just like when shampooing your hair. We tend to perspire more throughout the day and night during the hot summer months and the air is usually more polluted if you live in a city.
Always treat your skin with essential oils, seawater and light serums before your moisturizer day and night. It helps keep the wrinkles at bay and slow down the aging of your skin. Your moisturizer should be lighter during the day in the summer. After moisturizing your skin, use an SPF 30 right before you head out the door. You need to reapply the SPF every 2 hours if you are outdoors.
Q: What are the best ways to soothe sunburns?
A: Immediately apply very cool, damp face cloths to the skin to bring down the temperature. Drink a LOT of cool water with fresh lemon juice and the juice of turmeric added to it to help fight inflammation in the skin after a sunburn. If you cannot find fresh turmeric, get curcumin pills and take them several times a day. Next apply Marine Lotion for the perfect antidote for sunburned skin. Apply it immediately and repeat several times a day to prevent skin damage. My Hydrating Gel Mask is excellent to sleep in after a sunburn as well.
Q: What foods and drinks are best for de-bloating?
A: Fresh ginger helps quell bloating. Also, drink 4 ounces of Kombucha tea every day to make sure you have better digestion and to help control bloating. Eat more slowly to prevent bloating and try never to eat after 8:00 at night. Take one tablespoon of liquid acidophilus every night before bedtime. I love the brand Lifetime which can be found in the refrigerator section of your health food store.
Q: How can I minimize oily skin this summer?
A: Take care of your liver if you want to avoid oily skin. Avoid sugar as much as possible, and especially sugary alcoholic drinks. Skinny drinks are best if you are going to consume alcohol. Always give your liver a few days off each week from alcoholic drinks. You cannot live without a healthy liver. Think of your body long-term, not in the moment. Sugar and alcohol which converts to sugar in the liver give you a condition called 'fatty liver'. The liver is the only organ that can metabolize sugar, but an overloaded liver will not be able to properly metabolize sugar and instead turn it into fat that will build up over time. The best food to avoid this summer to decrease the risk of fatty liver and minimize oily skin is corn. If we could turn back time and grow corn that was healthier than it is now (with its super high sugar content), we could enjoy fresh corn in the summer. But now, just look around at the number of obese people in our country. Sugar derived from corn is one of the biggest contributors to fatty liver, as well as a sedentary lifestyle and not enough exercise.
Q: What are the best natural solutions for keeping bugs and mosquitoes away?
A: Essential oils found in my Marine Lotion help to prevent bug bites. Essential oils in general, particularly eucalyptus, citronella, lemongrass, catnip, cedar, and rosemary, used on the skin, added to your body lotion, can help keep them away. My Sea Clay Mask helps quickly heal them and so does my Seawater.
Q: How can I repair and treat the effects of long-term sun damage (ie. sunspots)?
A: The best way is by using IPL treatments after the summertime. Avoiding sugar and caring for your liver is the best way to prevent them. Also applying SPF as often as possible when outdoors is key.
Q: What are the best supplements to take in the summer?
A: Take curcumin and vitamin C (500 mg) several times a day to protect your collagen that sun exposure is destroying, vitamin D3 (2000 IU) a few times a day to protect breast health, as well as selenium, which is another powerful antioxidant, and, always, Calcium/magnesium in the proper ratio for healthy bones and skin.
