THE CORRELATION BETWEEN BEAUTY & YOUR DIET
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege to work on many different generations. What frustrates me the most is that younger generations fail to grasp the connection between their diet and the beauty of their skin. There isn't a natural product out there that can give young girls the skin they desire; they have to earn it through their diet and lifestyle changes, there is no way around it. Skincare products can only enhance the natural beauty of the skin; they can't completely prevent you from breaking out. Beauty starts from the inside out, in order to obtain beautiful, radiant and glowing skin; you must first ensure that you are eating a healthy, well balanced diet. The foods you eat play a key role in your skin's health and appearance. To learn more about this, I advise you to read my book The Ciminelli Solution: A 7-Day Plan for Radiant Skin, where I approach skincare from the inside out, and incorporate many of my healthy recipes, exercise tips, and treatment suggestions.
FALL PRODUCT PICKS
Pore Minimizing Cleanser is the newest cleanser to my line containing antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, perfect for those with oily and acne prone skin types. Two powerful ingredients in this cleanser, calendula flower extract and willow bark extract help to reduce aging effects, by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles and improving the skin's overall appearance.
*For those sensitive to algae, this cleanser is a great alternative to my Algae Deep Cleanse (seen below).
Algae Deep Cleanse is my natural exfoliant that acts as a light, daily facial peel. This lightweight cleanser melts away dead skin particles deep within the pores, leaving the skin smooth and soft. Algae Deep Cleanse is made up of algae extract, aloe vera, calendula extract, and essential oils of peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus.
Marine Lotion is my skin boosting anti-aging serum that provides the skin with nourishment from head to toe. This potent skin conditioner is loaded with algae extracts as well as essential oils of cypress, juniper and vetiver. A key factor in obtaining the Ciminelli Glow Marine Lotion can also reduce cellulite and stretch marks on the body.
Very Berry Antioxidant Serum is a high-powered fruit formula from the Amazon, my natural version of a glycolic peel. Rich in rejuvenating antioxidants and vitamins, this lightweight skin boosting serum brightens the skin, as the berries lend a natural tint to the skin, giving it a natural sun kissed glow. Very Berry Antioxidant Serum prevents wrinkles and repairs skin tone, texture and elasticity.
Revitalizing Sensitive Skin Moisturizer is expertly blended with skin-loving antioxidants including the wonder anti-aging ingredient Tetrapeptide-7 (matrixyl) to calm irritation and stimulate natural collagen production. This powerful moisturizer reduces wrinkles; repairs damaged skin, and improves the overall skin's appearance.
Body Silk is my luxurious lightweight lotion full of antioxidants to hydrate, soften and balance the skin's appearance. Body Silk helps to tighten and increase the elasticity and firmness of the skin. This is especially important for those who have spent much of the summer in the sun. Repeated exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays, will lead to loss of elasticity in the skin, causing saggy skin and wrinkles.
Pore Minimizing Face Mask is suited for all skin types, including normal, combination, oily and acne-prone skin. This soothing face mask contains both camphor and zinc, helping to tighten the pores and draw out impurities on the skin. This mask helps to absorb excess oils and stimulate circulation. Use once to twice per week and leave on for 10-15 minutes, this mask can also be used as a spot treatment on blemishes over night.
*This mask does not show up on the skin as much as Sea Clay Mask and is a great alternative if you are looking for something a bit less visible.
Body Buff is my non-abrasive, full body scrub. The Dead Sea salt in Body Buff gently exfoliates the skin while the essential oils replenish moisture into the skin. Body Buff is great for helping to heal the skin after drying sun damage.
STRENGTHENING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM
Our immune system protects us against disease-causing microorganisms. A well-functioning immune system is vital for your overall health. Below I will share with you various ways to further support the immune system to ensure that you are minimizing your risk of getting sick.
➢ Take 500mg of Vitamin C 5 times a day
Vitamin C boosts the immune system and can help to ward off cancer cells in the body. Additionally, vitamin C protects the body from the harmful effects of free radicals.
Not getting enough vitamin C is associated with high blood pressure, various types of cancer and heart disease.
➢ Take 5,000 IU's of Vitamin D a day
Vitamin D helps to kill bacteria in the body, and helps with growth and repair of tissues in the body.
➢ Eat fresh, organic fruits & veggies in season
Organic food is higher in nutrients and contains higher levels of vitamin C, antioxidants and minerals. Organic fruits and veggies in season include apples, raspberries strawberries, pumpkins, pomegranate and squash.
Due to the high amounts of vitamin C and magnesium levels in raspberries, it is said that they likely enhance fertility in men and women.
Strawberries are also high in vitamin C and fiber and contain calcium, magnesium and potassium, making them great for weight loss, and helping the body to maintain a healthy weight.
Yoga is a great way to get the body moving and helps to stimulate the mind, body and soul, keeping the body young and in balance. Yoga detoxifies the internal organs and calms the body after a stressful day. I recommend partaking in yoga 3 times a week. However, if you are not able to, even 10 minutes of yoga a day or before bed, is enough to provide you with results.
HEALTH & BEAUTY MAINTENANCE
Below I will share with you some tips necessary for maintaining a healthy, well balanced life.
➢ Wash Your Face Morning and Night
Be sure you are cleansing morning and night. Use your cleanser and massage with warm water to increase circulation. Rinse with cold water to close the pores.
Using wipes is not a substitute for a proper cleansing routine.
➢ Eat A Well Balanced Diet
Vitamin D helps to kill bacteria in the body, and helps with growth and repair of tissues in the body.
➢ Eat fresh, organic fruits & veggies in season
Breakfast – Be sure to kick off the day with a big breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and is key for weight loss. It is best to eat high-fiber foods; these will keep you full longer. Foods high in fiber include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
Lunch – Eating a nutritious lunch re-energizes the body. For lunch you should be eating lean proteins and foods rich in carbohydrates.
Dinner – Make sure to eat a healthy dinner containing foods with carbohydrates, vitamins and fiber, this will help to aid digestion.
Try not to eat late at night. You should not be eating past 8 o'clock at night. Eating late at night is associated with weight gain.
It is important to make sure you are calm and relaxed while eating so that you can digest your food properly. This affects your skin and quality of life.
➢ Stay Hydrated
Stay hydrated throughout the day to avoid headaches and feeling tired. Drinking a cup of warm water and lemon or a spoonful of apple cider vinegar is great for hydrating the body, fighting respiratory infections, detoxing and supporting weight loss.
➢ Cut Out Soda & Caffeine
Caffeinated drinks are diuretics, meaning that they cause you to urinate more frequently. They are notorious for leading to dehydration. Every glass of coffee or soda that you drink requires an extra glass of water, as the glass of soda/coffee cancels out the glass of water. Additionally, soda is packed with calories, weakens the bones, and is horrible for your teeth.
- Both soda and coffee can be the cause of acne. Soda is loaded with sugar and leads to an increase in blood sugar and fat levels in the body.
➢ Limit Your Sugar Intake
Sugar is high in fructose; this gets turned into fat in the liver and can cause liver disease. Eating too much sugar can cause significant weight gain leading to diabetes, elevated blood sugar and high blood pressure.
- Avoid artificial sweeteners such as Splenda (Sucralose), this reduces the amount of good bacteria in your bodies intestines, and increases your pH level. Contrary to popular belief, artificial sweeteners do not help you to lose or maintain weight, but actually stimulate your appetite and increase cravings. They also cause under eye crepes.
- Good sweeteners: High quality honey (tupelo and manuka), Agave Nectar
*If you must use sugar, use raw sugar.
FROM THE KITCHEN
Pureed Pumpkin and Prune Enzyme Peel
This peel is perfect for every kind of skin. The salicylic acid in pumpkin and prunes helps remove a buildup of oil in the pores and will brighten your complexion.
½ cup pitted prunes
½ cup canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
Combine the prunes with 4 cups spring water in a pot and heat on low 30 minutes or until very tender and plump.
Combine the prunes and pumpkin puree in a food processor and pulse until a smooth paste forms. Apply the mixture to a clean face and neck and leave on 30 minutes. Rinse with cool water.
Q & A WITH SUSAN
What changes should I be making to my skincare routine?
To remove the buildup of sunscreen and dead skin cells that may have accumulated over the summer, use my new 1-2-3 Glow Kit. This will remove the build up and minimize the size of your pores. Follow me on social media, as I will alert you when you are able to purchase my at home facial kit online.
What can I do about my dark spots?
Sun spots can be removed with IPL laser treatments. Over a period of time, they will disappear.
What are the biggest season-related skincare mistakes you see?
Not cleansing and hydrating the skin properly. It is crucial that no matter what time of year, you are cleansing the face both morning and night. You should also be using a moisturizer all year round, switching to heavier or lighter moisturizer depending on the season. If you are currently using a very light moisturizer, switch to one that is a big heavier. My Moisture Replenishing Day Cream
and Revitalizing Sensitive Skin Moisturizer
are perfect for the fall.
How often should I be exfoliating?
Twice daily is best. My new Pore Minimizing Cleanser
is a perfect product to use morning and evening to refine the pores and remove dead skin cells. Your skin will feel silky soft and fresh every time you use it. Makeup looks much better on exfoliated skin.
Do I need to still be wearing sunscreen when I go outside?
Yes, 12 months a year, it is necessary to use an SPF under make up or on bare skin. Any exposed skin needs protection. My SPF is nourishing and anti-aging with zinc and green tea which is an anti inflammatory. Eating sugar contributes to sun spots. Sugar impacts the liver and pancreas negatively. People following a macrobiotic diet rarely have sun spots, their blood is more balanced.
Q & A WITH DR. MARCO CONTRERAS
Oral hygiene is evidently the basis for so many beauty problems. Can you please elaborate on what diseases and/or beauty problems, failure to maintain oral hygiene can lead to? Also, please speak about the best ways to prevent them, and any routines you recommend implementing.
The oral cavity encloses a variety of bacteria and microorganisms in harmony with normal flora; together they keep a balanced Ph of the mouth. The lack of "good" oral hygiene like brushing, flossing, scraping of the tongue and oral mouth wash increases the number of bacteria and changes the Ph in the mouth to an acidic stage producing inflammation, to the gums and forming plaque around the teeth. Many diseases and disorders start appearing in the mouth, teeth, stomach, esophagus, intestinal tract and face. Specifically with the staphylococcal bacteria increasing, we see the gums developing diseases, epithelial or tissue erosion, gastritis, stomach diseases, acne, rosacea on the skin and even cancer. It is highly recommended to maintain excellent oral hygiene, having your face and skin as clean as possible. These precautions and regular visits to your skin and dental professionals will have you looking and feeling naturally healthy and beautiful.
Q & A WITH MAKE UP ARTIST KEIRA KARLIN
What are your fall beauty essentials?
One of the primary items to stock up on for falls windy colder temps is a great moisturizer. I happen to be a big fan of serums and then adding a sun block on top for daytime. One of my favorites is Susan's Hydrating Formula
; this essential oil is totally hydrating and luxurious! Big on every fall fashion week runway, are lots and lots of lashes and liner! So play up those eyes! I prefer gel liners to anything else, as they last all day and night. I also love multipurpose products that can give you flushed cheeks (think windblown) and berryish lip… if you're adventurous you can even try it as an eye shadow for that total monochromatic look, but only if the tone isn't too red.
Lipstick vs lip-gloss, and which would you recommend?
This is a very personal choice… I prefer lining the lip with a gorgeous liner and then going over the lips with a gloss on top. However, if gloss bleeds on you, or you prefer just one step, go with a lipstick.
What is the key to making my makeup last longer?
Keeping makeup on all day is one of the biggest issues I hear from my clients. My advice for less touching up starts with skincare. Exfoliating, especially in the fall is essential. Follow this with your everyday skincare routine. Lastly, use a great primer! Primer is key for face and eye shadow durability. After your makeup application, set your face with a setting spray.
What can I do with my makeup to look younger?
Looking younger is a national obsession, and here are a few things that can take years off of your face. For starters, if you don't need full coverage foundation, don't use one. If you can get away with a well-blended concealer, this can give you a more youthful look. Also, try a cream or tan eyeliner in the waterline to open up the eyes. For blush, shadow, contour and highlight, creams tend to create more of a dewy, younger look versus powders. If you don't prefer a cream product, try highlighting with a glowy champagne color highlight powder. Stay away from white highlight or shimmer powder!
